Māra and Jānis

Vidzeme, Latvia

Pļavas began when Māra and Jānis returned to her grandparents’ small farm in Vidzeme. There was an overgrown berry garden, an old kitchen table and room for a few beehives. They started with enough for their own pantry, then took a few extra jars to the local market.

Jānis looks after the bees along the edge of the meadow. Māra tends the currant bushes and cooks the preserves in small batches, tasting as she goes. Cheese-making belongs to the same kitchen rhythm: patient work, familiar ingredients and a table that is rarely empty.

Their collection follows the year. Summer brings golden honey and blackcurrants; cooler days make room for farmhouse cheese and the last jars of fruit. The idea is simple: a few well-made things to open, share and enjoy at home.
